First day of clinicals!
WOW, yesterday was a GREAT day. It was the first day that I went into do my EMT clinicals. I was working at St Mary's ER from 7am to 7pm with a 30 min lunch....now that part dont seem right to me, but I didnt mind since I didnt want to miss anything!!! I started out the day just following one guy named Johnny around. Nice guy, very helpfull but then I kept getting side tracked on diffrent things...so I ended up working with everyone! A GREAT group of workers! First patient of the day was a fall with a broken hip, that poor lady. I feel so bad for the people but at the same time, know that what I am doing is helping them so it keeps me motivated! The second one was an older lady who was having chest pain, or as she wanted to say, chest "stiffness". Well that is not a good sign and unfortunatly (for her) she WAS having a MI (or heart attack) she was probably one of the best patients I have ever heard or seen anywhere. I intercepted her when she came into the ER and I did not leave her side till she was thru surgery and resting in ICU! WHAT a GREAT process to be able to see. Now to back up a second...yep you heard me right. They had to go in and put the balloon in her artery and install a stint. I sat right behind the doc the whole time, and his assistant gave me a play by play on EVERYTHING!!!! It was probably one of the best things I have EVER seen!!!!! although, I could of done without wearing the lead suit! wholey cow those are heavy!!!!!! The whole process took about an hour, crazy how someone can be knocking on heavens door and then with a simple "roto rooter" process they feel 100% better!!! This patient told me at one time that she was in so much pain that she was about to give up. I calmly looked at her and told her she was not going to do so, that we would have her up and whipping her husband back into shape in no time! she laughed and after it was all said and done, promised me that she would never give up again. It was an AWESOME feeling knowing that I was there while they saved this ladies life! OK, for the downer of the day....I had to help them get blood from a 2mo old baby........YES 2MO OLD!!!! his lil veins were so small, and he screamed to high heaven, it about broke my heart! Also another cool thing that I got to see was a spinal tap being performed....I have had procedures like that done SEVERAL times with my back problems and it was really cool to be able to see it actually being done. Now I am torn on if I should go for nursing...or stick to the EMT/Paramedic side....oh decisions decisions....lol. I beleive I have found one more thing to make my life complete! wow, this year a new home, new man, and a new career......look out here comes a new GENNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
